The Toolserv Adjustable Torque Limiter (ATL) is an advanced tool engineered to mitigate the risks associated with excessive torque transfer in downhole operations, particularly in complex and extended reach drilling (ERD) wells. As the oil and gas industry pushes the boundaries of well depth and complexity, the challenges of managing torque and drag increase significantly. The ATL addresses these challenges by allowing controlled rotation of the entire string, up to a pre-set torque limit.

When deployed, the ATL permits full string rotation until the torque limit is reached. This feature is crucial in reducing drag forces and enabling the string to reach target depth (TD) more effectively. The tool is particularly beneficial in ERD wells, where long horizontal sections accumulate drag, making it difficult to reach TD without inducing harmful torque on sensitive downhole components. The ATL ensures that once the pre-set torque limit is reached, the lower section of the string stops rotating, while the upper string continues to rotate, thus protecting the equipment below.

The tool's torque limit can be adjusted between 1000 and 8000 ft-lbs, making it adaptable to various well conditions. For added versatility, the ATL can also be permanently locked to handle higher torque levels up to 15000 ft-lbs if required. This adaptability ensures that the tool can be configured to meet the specific needs of each well operation.

Constructed from high-strength alloy steel, the ATL is built to withstand the harsh conditions of downhole environments. It features a corrosion-resistant coating to ensure durability and longevity in sour gas and other corrosive environments. The tool's internal design accommodates the passage of a 1.75” OD packer setting ball, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of completion tools.

The ATL is a self-activating tool, meaning it automatically engages when the set torque limit is reached, requiring no manual intervention. This feature not only simplifies operations but also enhances safety by reducing the need for rig personnel to make adjustments in potentially hazardous conditions.

In summary, the Toolserv ATL is a robust and versatile solution for managing downhole torque, ensuring the integrity of high-value equipment, and enabling safe, efficient operations in the most challenging well environments. Its design is a result of close collaboration with a leading North Sea operator, ensuring that it meets the rigorous demands of modern drilling operations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and beyond.
